Tales of the city
Sacha Jafri kicked off a two-year world tour of his artworks with a charity auction in Dubai last month. With prints selling for around US$40,000 it proved that the artist has come a long way since he first got into painting as a dyslexic student with failing grades. He says he found true freedom of expression through painting after experiencing heartbreaking difficulties with reading because of his dyslexia. |

Lime light
Sure, Dubai gets the occasional big-name performer coming to town. Robbie Williams, Aerosmith, Shakira and Mary J. Blige are among those who have played Dubai. Then there are other acts such as Status Quo and Bob Geldof who just make you wonder whether this is the place where has-beens come to make a few more bucks before they’re truly put out to pasture. |

Charm school
It was a typical Dubai moment. After receiving precisely one hour’s notice to get to George Clooney’s press conference at the Dubai International Film Festival, I drove at breakneck speed to the venue, parked the car, ran across eight lanes of traffic and was faced with a point blank refusal of entry. Nobody appeared to be in charge and if I wanted to be admitted behind the big wooden doors, I’d have to fill out a media registration form and my registration would be ready in 24 hours. Subject to approval, of course. |

History repeats
Sixty years ago India and Pakistan didn’t exist as we know them today. It was 1947 and the British partitioned India into Muslim-controlled Pakistan and Hindu-controlled India. The transition to two separate nations was not without its problems, most notably violence between people of different religions. Most recently, the assassination of Benazir Bhutto in Pakistan has reminded the world how fragile political and religious stability can be in this part of the world. |

King Carlos
I’m on a flight from San Francisco and the credits are rolling for a cartoon movie called Surf’s Up. Some of the soundtrack in this movie is by Carlos Santana.
The great man, with the trademark fedora hat, doesn’t notice. He’s dozing with his iPod on.

Under her umbrella
In much the same vein as Beyonce, Rihanna is a gorgeous caramel-skinned singer and dancer and, before too long, probably a seasoned actor as well – perfect Men’s Style material. The twist with this bronzed belle is that she is not from the United States, she’s from the tiny island of Barbados – the same island that produced sports stars such as Joel Garner, Wes Hall – two of the greatest cricketers of all time.
